Scouts learn that helping is something you do, not just something you talk about. Two service traditions anchor Pack 274's fall.
Coastal Cleanup
A coastal or shoreline cleanup is exactly what it sounds like: volunteers spread out along a stretch of shoreline and remove litter before it can remain in or spread through the environment. It is a great first service project for young Scouts because the job is clear, the results are visible, and everyone can help.
Pack 274 has done cleanup work at Almaden Lake in past years. This year the pack is trying a new venue — a fresh stretch of shoreline to explore and take care of.

Scouting for Food
Scouting for Food is a neighborhood food drive run by Scouts. Pack 274 divides up the Graystone / Woodside of Almaden area. One week, Scouts post door tags letting neighbors know a collection is coming. A week later, they return to pick up the donated food — and see the whole project through from outreach to result.
It is neighbors helping neighbors, with Scouts doing the legwork. Last year, Pack 274 collected 450 lbs of food and delivered it to Sacred Heart Community Service in San Jose.
